Does Aetna Cover Rehab?
Aetna can help pay for rehab when your plan considers the care medically necessary, and many Aetna PPO plans carry out-of-network benefits that may apply to treatment with us. Bliss Recovery works with Aetna PPO plans on an out-of-network basis, and our admissions team can verify your Aetna benefits for free before you commit to anything.
Verify Your Aetna BenefitsWhat Aetna PPO Plans Can Cover for Addiction Treatment
Aetna PPO plans generally include behavioral health benefits for substance use treatment, and for most plans, federal parity law requires those benefits to be no more restrictive than comparable medical care. When your PPO includes out-of-network benefits, they can reach from withdrawal management through outpatient care, usually at a higher cost-share.
Aetna reviews each level of care on its own, and higher levels typically need precertification. Aetna's own guidance says members who go out of network handle precertification themselves. We prepare that request with you, so it never sits on your to-do list alone.
- Medically supervised detox is usually reviewed before a planned admission, with Aetna weighing documented withdrawal risk.
- Residential treatment typically needs precertification before arrival, followed by continued-stay reviews as care progresses.
- Partial hospitalization (PHP) often requires its own approval, even when it follows a residential stay.
- Intensive outpatient (IOP) may or may not need precertification, depending on how your Aetna plan is written.
Coverage for Co-Occurring Conditions
Aetna's behavioral health benefits generally include mental health care alongside substance use treatment, so co-occurring mental health conditions may be treated in the same stay when both are documented. We treat addiction alongside depression, PTSD, ADHD, and other conditions in one coordinated plan.

How Aetna Out-of-Network Coverage Works and What You Might Pay
Aetna is part of CVS Health, and its plans span employer, individual, Medicare, and Medicaid coverage. Many employer plans are self-funded, with Aetna administering benefits your employer designed, so two Aetna cards can work very differently.
Your plan type shapes what's possible here:
- PPO plans are the ones we work with, since many include out-of-network benefits for residential care and the levels that follow.
- HMO and EPO plans generally cover out-of-network care only in emergencies, and we aren't in-network with HMOs.
- Aetna Medicare Advantage plans fall under Medicare, which we don't accept.
- Aetna's Medicaid plans, sold as Aetna Better Health in some states, aren't accepted here, and we aren't in-network with Medi-Cal.
Covered doesn't mean free. For out-of-network care, Aetna pays based on the amount it recognizes or allows, which is often lower than a provider's charges. Depending on your plan, you may owe a separate out-of-network deductible, coinsurance, and the difference between that amount and the bill.
Amounts billed above the allowed figure generally don't count toward your deductible either. We walk you through each piece once your verification comes back.
Out-of-network claims are usually submitted by the member after treatment, and we supply the itemized superbills and clinical documentation Aetna asks for. Our overview of PPO and out-of-network benefits explains reimbursement in more detail, and our private pay options are there if your plan leaves a gap.

What to Have Ready
You bring:
- Your Aetna ID card, front and back
- The subscriber's full name and date of birth
- Your group number and employer name, if your plan comes through work
- The behavioral health phone number on the back of your card, if one is listed
- The level of care you're considering, if you know it
- Current medications and any past treatment programs
We handle the clinical assessment, the precertification request, and the paperwork behind it. Traveling in from out of state? Our travel and arrival guide covers getting here, and our list of what to bring to treatment keeps packing simple.
If Aetna Denies or Delays Approval
A denial isn't always the final word. Aetna's denial letter lists the reason, your filing deadline, and the steps for an internal appeal.
We can pull together clinical records for the appeal and request a peer-to-peer review between our medical team and Aetna's reviewer. If the internal appeal doesn't settle it, many plans allow an independent external review, and urgent situations can be reviewed on an expedited basis.

Where Aetna Members Stay
Aetna members receive care in our private Hollywood Hills homes, with a maximum of 12 clients across two residences. You can take a look at our residences before you ever pack a bag.
- Lakeview Creston is our primary residence, set on Creston Drive.
- Spanish Villa Durand is our second residence, a short drive away on Durand Drive.

Why Aetna PPO Members Choose Bliss Recovery
Picking an out-of-network provider is a deliberate choice, and for many Aetna members it comes down to privacy and a smaller setting. Our homes carry no clinical signage, admissions calls stay confidential, and every plan starts with a personalized assessment instead of a fixed calendar.
- Programs from detox through IOP run under one clinical team, so each step down builds on the last.
- Medical and psychiatric care runs alongside therapy, so both conditions in a dual diagnosis are treated together.
- Couples rehab lets partners go through treatment side by side when both need care.
- Family support brings the people closest to you into the process when it helps.
- Aftercare and alumni support keeps you connected once residential care ends.
You can meet the clinicians and staff behind our programs before you call. Bliss Recovery is licensed by the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS license #191336AP), accredited by The Joint Commission, LegitScript certified, and a member of the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers (NAATP).

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Bliss Recovery in-network with Aetna?
No. We're out-of-network with Aetna and work with Aetna PPO plans through their out-of-network benefits. A free verification shows what your specific plan allows here.
Can I use my Aetna PPO at an out-of-network rehab?
Often, yes, if your PPO includes out-of-network benefits and the care meets Aetna's medical necessity criteria. Some plans include no out-of-network benefits at all, which is why we check yours first.
Does Aetna cover rehab here with an HMO, EPO, Medicare, or Medi-Cal plan?
Usually not. HMO and EPO plans generally limit out-of-network coverage to emergencies, and we don't accept HMOs, Medicare, or Medi-Cal. We're still happy to talk through private pay with you.
Will I owe anything out of pocket with Aetna?
Most likely. Out-of-network care typically comes with a deductible and coinsurance, and you may owe the difference between Aetna's allowed amount and the bill. Your verification spells out your plan's terms before you decide.
Does Aetna require precertification for rehab?
It's common for detox, residential treatment, and PHP, and some plans also want approval before IOP. With an out-of-network provider, precertification falls to the member, so we prepare and submit the clinical documentation with you.
My employer's plan is self-funded. Does that change anything?
It can. Self-funded plans follow the benefit design your employer chose, even with Aetna's name on the card. Verification confirms how your specific plan treats out-of-network care.
Can I use an Aetna plan from another state?
Possibly. Aetna plans differ by state and employer, so how yours handles out-of-network care in California depends on the plan itself. Verification confirms it before you travel.
Is my Aetna benefits check confidential?
Yes. Benefits checks and admissions conversations stay confidential, and we share information with Aetna only as needed to verify benefits and request precertification.
