Couples Rehab in California
Written and reviewed by the Bliss Recovery clinical team. Last reviewed August 2026.
Couples rehab at Bliss Recovery is residential addiction and dual diagnosis treatment for two partners admitted at the same time, each with an individual clinical plan, plus dedicated relationship work alongside it. Both of you get your own medical and psychiatric care, delivered at two private Hollywood Hills residences in Los Angeles, California. Neither of you has to choose between getting well and staying together.
Couples rehab treats two people as two patients. Each partner receives an individual assessment, medical plan, and therapy track, with couples sessions layered on top.
Bliss runs two private Hollywood Hills residences with a twelve-client cap each, so couples are placed in a small, discreet setting rather than a large facility.
Dual diagnosis care runs alongside addiction treatment for both partners, across eight co-occurring conditions.
Insurance is verified separately for each partner at no cost, before anyone commits to anything.
The couples format
What Couples Rehab at Bliss Recovery Involves
Couples rehab is a format, not a shortcut. You and your partner are admitted together, assessed separately, and treated on plans built for each of you individually. Relationship work runs in parallel, because the patterns two people build around substance use rarely dissolve on their own once the substances are gone.
Three things happen at once in a couples admission:
Individual clinical care: Each partner gets medical stabilization and their own therapy track.
Structured relationship work: Couples sessions focus on communication, boundaries, and the dynamics that kept use going.
Coordination across both plans: The clinical team works both plans together, so progress in one person's treatment is not quietly undermined by the other's.
Care runs across the full continuum at Bliss, from medical detox through residential, PHP, IOP, and aftercare. Partners do not always move through it at the same pace. When one of you needs a higher level of care or a longer stay, we coordinate the difference rather than forcing an artificial match.
Five levels of care
Levels of Care for Couples
Levels of care differ by intensity and schedule, not by quality of clinical attention. Most couples enter at residential or detox and step down through our continuum of programs as stability builds.
Physician-supervised withdrawal management with round-the-clock clinical staff. Partners are assessed and medicated independently, because withdrawal timelines and risk profiles differ even when the substance is the same
Partners who need medically managed stabilization before therapeutic work begins
Private suite at one of the two Hollywood Hills residences, daily clinical and medical oversight, individual therapy, and scheduled couples sessions. Twelve-client cap per residence
Couples who need continuous oversight and full separation from triggering environments
Continued clinical touchpoints and alumni community after the formal program ends
Long-term stability and relapse prevention, where isolation does the most damage
Clinical fit
Who Couples Rehab Is For
Couples rehab suits partners who are both willing to enter treatment, and whose relationship is stable enough that shared clinical work will help rather than harm. It is not the right format for every couple, and part of our job at intake is saying so honestly.
Common Situations We See
Both partners using, both ready to enter treatment at the same time
One partner in active addiction, the other carrying the household and ready for their own clinical work
Partners who have each completed treatment separately and relapsed together
Executives and public-facing clients who need two admissions handled with the same discretion
Veterans and their partners, where service-related trauma is part of the clinical picture
Integrated mental health care
Dual Diagnosis Care for Both Partners
Co-occurring mental health conditions are treated alongside addiction for each partner, not deferred until after. Anxiety, depression, and trauma histories frequently sit underneath the substance use in couples admissions, and treating only the substance leaves the mechanism in place.
Each partner receives an independent psychiatric assessment. Medication decisions, therapy targets, and treatment pacing are set per person. Relationship sessions then account for what each of you is actually working with, rather than treating both partners as one clinical unit.
Bliss treats eight co-occurring conditions across the residential and outpatient continuum. Where a condition requires acute stabilization beyond our licensed scope, we say so and coordinate the appropriate level of care.
Individual, shared, and family work
Therapies and Relationship Work
Couples treatment at Bliss combines individual clinical care, structured relationship sessions, and supportive wellness programming, built on the same clinical approach we use across every program. Each partner's therapy plan is built from their own assessment.
Clinical Core
Individual psychotherapy: Each partner works with a therapist on their own history, triggers, and recovery plan.
Trauma-informed care: Treatment is structured around how trauma shapes use, which matters when two people share the same history.
Group therapy: Peer work in a small, confidential setting.
Psychiatric care and medication management: Assessed and managed per partner.
Relationship and Family Work
Couples sessions: Communication, boundaries, and the specific dynamics that sustained substance use in the relationship.
Family and chosen-family sessions: Bliss's family program extends to partners, parents, and chosen family, with secure video sessions for anyone joining from out of town.
Discharge and re-entry planning: Two people returning to one home need a plan they built together.
Supportive Wellness Programming
Wellness programming supports clinical treatment. It does not replace it.
Confidential Admissions Call: One call covers both partners. We take a clinical picture of each of you, answer the logistics questions, and begin insurance verification. Have each partner's ID, insurance card, current medication list, and an emergency contact ready. Our what to bring guide covers the rest.
Independent Clinical Assessment: Each partner completes a medical exam and a mental health assessment on arrival, plus relationship safety screening. Assessments are separate by design.
Medically Supervised Detox Where Indicated: Where withdrawal management is needed, it runs under physician supervision with clinical staff on site around the clock. Partners are managed independently.
Housing and Stabilization Decisions: The clinical team determines accommodation based on each partner's stability and the intake findings. Both of you will know the reasoning before anything is decided.
Individual, Couples, and Group Work Begins: Individual sessions, scheduled couples sessions, and group work start together, alongside the daily structure of the residence.
First-Week Clinical Review: Around day seven both plans are reviewed and updated, and aftercare planning begins. Step-downs to PHP or IOP are recommended where clinically appropriate.
Coverage and benefits
Insurance and Payment for Couples
Insurance is verified separately for each partner. Insurers process benefits per individual, so two admissions mean two verifications, and we handle both in the same conversation at no cost before either of you commits to anything.
Bliss works with most major PPO plans and is in network with First Health, HealthSmart, MultiPlan, PMCS, and TriWest. Out-of-network PPO and private pay are welcomed. Bliss is not in network with HMO plans or Medi-Cal.
What your specific plan covers depends on your plan, your clinical presentation, and your insurer's determination. Our admissions team walks each partner through what their own benefits show, in a private conversation, with nothing decided before you have the information.
Two private residences in the Hollywood Hills, a few minutes apart. Both share one clinical team and one continuum of care. Each caps at twelve clients. Couples come to us from across California and from out of state.
Lakeview on Creston Drive
2780 Creston Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90068
Lakeview looks out over Lake Hollywood toward the Hollywood Sign. Natural light and open outdoor space carry the room, which lowers the ambient stress that competes with clinical work. Private suites, chef-prepared meals, managed phone access, and secure WiFi.
Spanish Villa on Durand Drive
2816 Durand Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90068
Spanish Villa is classic Spanish architecture with deep landscaping on a quiet hillside street. The feel is closer to reclaiming something than enduring something. Private suites, the same clinical staffing, the same confidentiality protocols.
Two residences give us placement flexibility that a single facility does not. For couples, that matters, because clinical judgment sometimes calls for separate residences during stabilization while both partners stay inside the same program with the same team.
The Bliss difference
Why Couples Choose Bliss Recovery
Two Private Residences, Twelve Clients Each
Small by design. Couples are placed in a residence, not a wing of a facility, with a high staff-to-client ratio and no clinical signage at the door.
Discretion Built for Public-Facing Clients
Two admissions handled with the same confidentiality protocols. Managed phone access and secure WiFi keep working professionals functional without compromising privacy.
A Full Clinical Continuum Under One Team
Detox through aftercare, with one clinical team coordinating both partners' plans. Nobody gets handed off mid-treatment.
Dual Diagnosis Depth for Both Partners
Eight co-occurring conditions treated alongside addiction, assessed independently for each partner.
Yes. Couples can be admitted at the same time, with each partner assessed and treated on an individual clinical plan and structured couples sessions running alongside. Clinical fit is determined at intake for each partner separately.
Accommodation is a clinical decision made after both partners complete intake, based on each person's stability and the intake findings. Shared and separate arrangements are both possible, and the clinical reasoning is explained to both of you before anything is set.
Couples arrive in that situation often. One partner enters treatment for substance use while the other engages in their own clinical work around the relationship dynamics, boundaries, and often their own mental health. Both people get care.
Yes. Eligibility rests on the relationship being a committed partnership and clinically appropriate for shared work, not on marital status. Both partners must be 18 or over.
Insurers process benefits for each person individually, so each partner's coverage is verified separately. Bliss works with most major PPO plans and is in network with First Health, HealthSmart, MultiPlan, PMCS, and TriWest. Verification is free and carries no obligation. What a specific plan covers depends on that plan and the insurer's determination.
Length is set by clinical need per partner. Medical detox typically runs 5 to 10 days and residential stays typically run 30 to 90 days, with PHP, IOP, and aftercare continuing after. Partners do not always move at the same pace, and the program is coordinated around that.
No. Where intake screening surfaces relationship safety concerns, we recommend separate individual placements and coordinate the transition. Shared clinical work in that situation is not safe for either partner.
Yes. Each partner receives an independent psychiatric assessment, and co-occurring conditions are treated alongside addiction rather than after it. Conditions requiring acute stabilization beyond our licensed scope are referred to the appropriate level of care.
